Calculating wallpaper rolls is more complex than it first appears because of pattern repeat — the vertical distance after which the pattern on the wallpaper repeats itself. When hanging patterned wallpaper, each strip (drop) must be cut to start at the same point in the pattern, which means the top of each cut piece must align with the room's ceiling. This results in wasted wallpaper at the bottom of each cut.
For a 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, one door and two windows, using standard 33 ft rolls at 21 in wide with no pattern repeat: net wall area works out to roughly 302 sq ft, needing about 5-6 rolls. Switch to a wallpaper with an 18-inch pattern repeat and the same room needs closer to 7-8 rolls — the repeat alone can add a full extra roll or more, which is why it's worth checking before you order.
Our wallpaper calculator accounts for pattern repeat by calculating the effective usable length per roll. If your wall height is 8 feet and the pattern repeat is 18 inches (1.5 ft), you can only get ⌊(roll length ÷ (wall height + repeat))⌋ usable drops per roll. For a 33 ft roll, that would be ⌊33 ÷ 9.5⌋ = 3 drops per roll instead of 4 drops for a plain wallpaper — requiring significantly more rolls.
