The HomeCraft Wallpaper Calculator lets you estimate exactly how many rolls you need including pattern repeat and door/window deductions.
Calculating wallpaper rolls is more complex than it first appears because of pattern repeat — the vertical distance after which the pattern on the wallpaper repeats itself. When hanging patterned wallpaper, each strip (drop) must be cut to start at the same point in the pattern, which means the top of each cut piece must align with the room's ceiling. This results in wasted wallpaper at the bottom of each cut.
Our wallpaper calculator accounts for pattern repeat by calculating the effective usable length per roll. If your wall height is 8 feet and the pattern repeat is 18 inches (1.5 ft), you can only get ⌊(roll length ÷ (wall height + repeat))⌋ usable drops per roll. For a 33 ft roll, that would be ⌊33 ÷ 9.5⌋ = 3 drops per roll instead of 4 drops for a plain wallpaper — requiring significantly more rolls. Our calculator handles this automatically so you never waste money or run short.
Most wallpaper rolls are sold in two standard sizes: European rolls measure 10 metres long × 53 cm wide, while American/British standard rolls are typically 27–33 feet long × 20.5–21 inches wide. Our tool defaults to the most common dimensions but allows full customization. We also calculate the number of paste/adhesive containers you'll need based on the total square footage to be covered.
